Riner Heritage Day will be held on the campus of Auburn High School from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday September 6, with old and new events. The parade will start at 10 am along Route 8. We will have exhibits, music, and hopefully vendors under cover so that you can stay dry and enjoy the festival. We need the moisture so will be glad to see some rain, but hope we can avoid high winds and heavy rains that could cause problems for the parade and outside events.
Weather permitting, there will be a kids' pet show immediately following the parade at 10:30 (357-0345 for more info). Parents should register their children by 11:15 for the kids' races and games that start at 11:30. There will be opportunities to compete in a toddler dash, preschool dash and preschool hop, kids' dash, sack races, hula hoop contest, jump rope contest, and egg and spoon races. If it is raining, put your kids in rain boots and see who can be first to fill a bucket with rainwater using a plastic sheet some string and small cups. We hope to have some other activities to keep kids entertained in case of rain. Again, weather permitting, 4-H will have pony rides for the kids after the pet show is over.
Due South Barbecue will serve lunch, and the Bolt family will be making ice cream for sale.
The fire house, log cabin museum, and community cannery will be open for tours. Museum displays include farm equipment and other old tools, kitchen houseware, AHS class of 1958 history, Civil War fashions and reenactment, 1930s minutes of the Riner Grange, etc.
Booths will be set up by VCE Master Gardeners, Gwen's Wedding Cakes, vendors selling quilts, crochet items, woodwork, etc. Saturday will be the last day to buy a raffle ticket for the rifle, cherry coffee table, crystal candlesticks, and gas cards, in support of Riner Ruritans. We will also be having a 50-50 raffle. Contributions to the Riner Ruritans go to support Riner Heritage Day, scholarships for local students, food baskets for families in need, and other programs.
We hope you will bring a friend and join in the celebration, rain or shine!

Riner Heritage Day 2008 Will be Saturday Sept. 6

Plan now to participate in Riner Heritage Day, Saturday September 6, 2008.
The 8th annual Riner Heritage Day was a special event in 2007 as the Riner Fire Department celebrated its 50th anniversary in conjunction with Heritage Day. The first Riner Heritage Day was held in 1999 to celebrate the cultural and agricultural heritage of the area, with the first parade held on September 9, 2000.
The event on Saturday September 8 started at 10 am with a parade along Route 8 from Fairview Church Road past Auburn High School. The grand marshals were charter members of the fire department, including Jon Altizer, Louis Sowers, Kermit Grim, Raymond Millirons, and Billy Greear. The parade featured fire and rescue equipment from around the region, antique and classic cars and tractors, the Auburn High School marching band, Zippy and Zoey from Shelor Motor Mile Speedway, Southwest Virginia Natural Horsemanship Club, and more.
Following the parade, there was a children's pet show sponsored by 4-H. Children's races and games (sack race, hula hoop, jump rope, etc.) took place with cash prizes and ribbons awarded.
The fire department had a well-attended open house and an exhibit of historic photos and antique firefighting equipment. Members of the Riner Fire Department gave tours and answered questions.
The Riner Museum was open with old photographs, yearbooks, displays, and genealogical information. The Riner Cannery was open for touring, with an apple-butter making demonstration provided by the Auburn United Methodist Church. Pickled peaches and peach preserves were sold as a cannery fundraiser--the pickled peaches sold out within a few hours. Several booths and activities were set up around the museum building, including crafters, ice cream cranked with a hit-and-miss engine, kid's art table and face painting, horse rides, horse and buggy rides. Olen Gardner and friends once again performed bluegrass and traditional music with great enjoyment and participation from the crowd.
The event was sponsored by Riner Ruritans, the Riner Branch of the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center, and the Riner Fire Department. Those interested in participating in future years in the parade or as a vendor can download a registration form from the Riner Ruritan website (riner.ruritan.org) or contact Amanda Witt (357-0345 cell) or Kelly Brennan (382-3084, 250-5456 cell). If you'd like to help in organizing the event, we'd love to hear from you as well.
Thanks to all the participants last year who contributed so much!
